Social Studies Overview

This year, fifth grade social studies focuses on United States history and geography. To fulfill the required curriculum, students will be using the Social Studies Alive: America's Past text to explore our nation's history, the Washington State Native American curriculum known as Since Time Immemorial and the interactive geography curriculum known as Nystrom Hands-on Geography: Applying Map Skills. Students will also explore environmental current events via a kids current events website known as Dogonews.
Beginning in April, fifth graders will be working on a culminating classroom based assessment. This assessment will consist of an oral and slideshow presentation centering on a current local public issue.
Throughout the year, students will develop and improve study skills such as reading for information from texts, determining what information in the text is important, creating a set of two column notes to use as a study aid and test taking strategies.
