Communications Overview

During the month of September, fifth graders will have five writing assignments. Those assignments will include four stand alone paragraphs that share their thoughts on people, talents, and ideals that the students feel strongly about and a five paragraph autobiographical essay that combines those some of those thoughts. I will use this piece as a baseline to determine the skills that each student will need to further develop. Throughout October and into November, students will begin to develop their public speaking skills by giving a series of speeches to their classmates. In mid November, December, and January fifth graders will be learning how to use the Google Slides application. Their first slide presentation will center on aspects of their own life. A second slide presentation will be the culmination of their state research projects. At the beginning of February, state report oral presentations begin. By Mid February and into March, fifth graders will be composing their second five paragraph essay, this time focusing especially closely on further developing their paragraph writing skills as well as improving proofreading and editing skills. They will also learn how to better use the Google Docs word processing application. In early April kids will begin their third slide presentation. It will be a part of a Social Studies Classroom Based Assessment (CBA) that focuses on a local public issue. In late April and May we will return to essay writing, editing and proof reading.

On most Fridays, fifth graders will have the opportunity to sharpen their keyboarding skills. They will take part in activities that are designed to increase their typing speed and accuracy. Students will also be able to test their fluency regularly so that they can track their progress. Another opportunity will involve writing timed responses to fun and interesting questions. Additional home keyboarding practice will be essential for students to progress at an accelerated rate.
